‘I killed my rapist when he came back for my sister'

The BBC's Shame series examines a disturbing new phenomenon: the use of private or sexually explicit

images to threaten, blackmail and shame young people - mainly girls and women - in some of the world's most conservative societies. This includes the use of mobile phones to record sexual assault, and to ensure the victim's silence by threatening to make the images public.

In a Tunisian prison the BBC met Amal, a young woman who was sexually assaulted and later photographed naked. The man threatened to show the photos to Amal’s family, forcing her to submit to months of blackmail and abuse. But when he tried to involve her younger sister, Amal reached her limit.
